President George W. Bush will meet Alexandra Chungwhen he arrives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday, May 21, 2004. Chung, a graduating senior at Louisiana State University, is an active volunteer tutorhelping adults and young people improve their reading and academic skills.

The USA Freedom Corps is President Bush’s initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation by volunteering two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetime. Since January 2002, President Bush has met with hundreds of individuals around the country, like Chung, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

For the past four years, Chung has volunteered each Friday evening at University Baptist Church as a tutor in Conversational English classes for LSU students and community members who need to improve their language skills. For the past three years, Chung has also been involved with a program called Reading Friends at Highland Elementary School where she reads to students and helps tutor them in math and English. She is also involved as a tutor with Boys Hope of Baton Rouge, a national organization to help at-risk young boys reach their potential. Additionally, during her senior year of college, Chung served as president of the Roteract Club of LSU, the collegiate version of Rotary International. During her tenure, she spearheaded numerous charitable events for organizations including Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corpsoffice at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world.
