President Bush to Recognize Pennsylvania Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Miriam Shambach when he arrives in
Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on Monday, May 24, 2004. Shambach, the wife of Colonel
Stephen Shambach, volunteers as a tutor at local schools and has served with
programs connected to the U.S. Army War College.
The USA Freedom Corps is President Bush’s
initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their
nation by volunteering two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their
lifetime. Since January 2002, President Bush has met with hundreds of
individuals around the country, like Shambach, who are answering the call to
volunteer service.
Shambach volunteers at Bethel Christian Academy and Bellaire Elementary
Schools, helping students with their studies, as well as assisting the staff
with administrative tasks. She has also served as a Daisy Troop assistant
leader and helped coach basketball for the Youth Services program on post.
Shambach has participated in the military sponsorship program for international
students attending the U.S. Army War College. In this program, American
families help international families adjust to a new and unfamiliar environment.
In addition, Shambach has served as the entertainment coordinator for the
annual Carlisle Holiday Tea, in which patrons of local retirement and nursing
homes are brought to the base for a Christmas show.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA
Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to
Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our
homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
