President Bush to Recognize West Virginia Student for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Heather Stout when he arrives in
Parkersburg, West Virginia, on Thursday, May 13, 2004. Stout, a sophomore
education major at West Virginia University at Parkersburg, is an active
mathematics tutor at her university.
Earlier this year, the USA Freedom Corps – President Bush’s initiative to
engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation by
volunteering two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetime –
celebrated its second anniversary. Since January 2002, President Bush has met
with more than 280 individuals around the country, like Stout, who are answering
the call to volunteer service.
Stout is an active volunteer in her community. At the Parkersburg branch of
West Virginia University, she tutors a group of university students two or three
nights each week in mathematics. In addition to her regular group, Stout tutors
walk-in students who need occasional help. Outside of the university, she also
tutors a fourth grade student in reading and soon she will begin tutoring her
student in mathematics. Although the school year has recently ended, Stout will
continue to tutor her fourth grade student throughout the summer.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA
Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to
Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our
homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by
calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
