President Bush to Recognize Wisconsin Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Gloria Grandone upon arrival in Appleton, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, March 30, 2004. Grandone is an active volunteer with both the Doug and Carla Salmon Foundation and Community Action Program (CAP) Services.

President George W. Bush will meet Gloria Grandone when he arrives in Appleton, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, March 30, 2004. Grandone is an active volunteer with both the Doug and Carla Salmon Foundation and Community Action Program (CAP) Services.

Earlier this year, the USA Freedom Corps – President Bush’s initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation by volunteering two years or 4,000 hours – celebrated its second anniversary. Since January 2002, President Bush has met with more than 270 individuals around the country, like Grandone, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

For the past five years, Grandone has been an active volunteer with the Doug and Carla Salmon Foundation. There, she provides ongoing support, guidance, and advice for scholarship recipients who are trying to balance the demands of family and work while pursuing a higher education. Through the Salmon Foundation, Grandone also began to volunteer with Community Action Program (CAP) Services, a nonprofit organization that helps low-income individuals become more self-sufficient and financially secure. Working as part of the organization’s “Skills Enhancement Program,” Grandone helps individuals each semester become financially secure by linking them with important resources to further their education, acquire new skills, and assist with tuition, transportation, and child care costs.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
