President Bush to Recognize Georgia Couple for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Don and Anita McCoy when he arrives in
Greensboro, Georgia, on Friday, April 2, 2004. The McCoys are active volunteers
with Greensboro Dreamers, a long-term educational support program that provides
assistance to a group of children beginning in elementary school and continuing
through their educational careers.
Earlier this year, the USA Freedom Corps – President Bush’s initiative to
engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation by
volunteering two years or 4,000 hours – celebrated its second anniversary. Since
January 2002, President Bush has met with more than 270 individuals around the
country, like the McCoys, who are answering the call to volunteer service.
Don McCoy, 73, and Anita McCoy, 70, have been involved the Greensboro
Dreamers since its inception in 2000. The Greensboro Dreamers is affiliated with
the “I Have a Dream Foundation,” and their mission is to take a group of 54
Greensboro Elementary School children and help them become productive citizens
by providing a long-term educational support program with an assured opportunity
for further education beyond high school through tuition assistance. Anita is a
former 5th grade teacher who uses her classroom experience to tutor the students
once a week. She helps those that need extra assistance in math or reading and
gives them more concentrated attention than they often receive in the classroom.
Don maintains the website, keeping it updated with pictures and stories as the
children progress. He also refurbishes computers for students who do not have
computers at home. The McCoys are active volunteers with the Public Library and
the First Books Program in Greene County which gives a book per month to
children.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through
the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the
call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect
our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by
calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
