President Bush to Recognize Phoenix Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Barbara Lockwood upon arrival in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday, March 26, 2004. Lockwood is an active volunteer with Keep Phoenix Beautiful, a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.

President George W. Bush will meet Barbara Lockwood when he arrives in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday, March 26, 2004. Lockwood is an active volunteer with Keep Phoenix Beautiful, a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.

Earlier this year, the USA Freedom Corps – President Bush’s initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation by volunteering two years or 4,000 hours – celebrated its second anniversary. Since January 2002, President Bush has met with more than 260 individuals around the country, like Lockwood, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Lockwood is an active volunteer with Keep Phoenix Beautiful, a nonprofit organization that provides educational outreach programs to encourage citizens to help beautify and improve their neighborhoods in hopes of creating healthy and safe communities. Each month, Lockwood participates in group volunteer activities organized by Keep Phoenix Beautiful such as picking up litter, assisting with beautification projects and providing maintenance to parks and recreation areas in the community. Most recently, Lockwood participated in a “litter survey” to promote an anti-litter campaign for individuals living in the Phoenix area. As part of this campaign, she joined other volunteers to survey the amount of garbage gathered along Phoenix freeways and participate in the clean up effort. Lockwood also serves as a member of the Keep Phoenix Beautiful Board of Directors.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
