President Bush to Recognize Philadelphia Area Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Pearl Kluth upon arrival in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, on Saturday, January 31, 2004. Kluth has been an active volunteer
with the Haverford Township Townwatch program since 1978.
This month, the USA Freedom Corps – President Bush’s initiative to engage all
Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation – is celebrating its
second anniversary. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the
country, like Kluth, who are answering the call to volunteer service.
For the past 26 years, Kluth has been an active volunteer with the Haverford
Township Townwatch Program, a volunteer mobile crime prevention unit that works
with the local police department to better serve the community. In 1978, Kluth
began volunteering to patrol local neighborhoods in her own car and report
suspicious activity to the police department. In 1982, Kluth became a certified
Community Crime Prevention Specialist, which made her more familiar with area
policing efforts and better able to help with public safety work in her
community. For the past seven years, Kluth has served as the director of
operations, where she is responsible for volunteer patrol schedules and any
issues that may arise while others are on duty. Kluth also serves as the
correspondence secretary, replying to mail regarding the Haverford Township
Townwatch program.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA
Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to
volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to
protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion
around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own
neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by
calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
