President Bush to Recognize Cincinnati Student for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Sarah Hope Reilly when he arrives in
Cincinnati, Ohio, on Monday, October 7, 2002. Reilly is a senior at Walnut Hills
High School who volunteers each week tutoring younger children.
In his State of the Union address, President Bush called on all Americans to
dedicate at least two years over their lifetime to service to their communities,
our country and the world. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the
country who are answering the call to service and will recognize Reilly as an
example of the dedication to service he is hoping to instill in all Americans
through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.
Since her junior year in high school, Reilly has volunteered one afternoon
each week at the Washington United Church of Christ, tutoring low-income
children as part of their after-school "Homework Club." Reilly is also a member
of the Community Action Team at Walnut Hills High School, where she joins other
students each Saturday for service activities in their community such as serving
food at a local soup kitchen or volunteering at a local animal shelter. This
past summer, Reilly helped raise money for her school's music program by
volunteering at a concession stand during Cincinnati Reds home baseball games.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through
the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the
call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect
our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or
by calling 1-877-USA-Corps.
