President Bush to Recognize Knoxville Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Linda Clark when he arrives in Knoxville,
Tennessee, tomorrow. Clark has been an active volunteer in the Knoxville
community for over 26 years.
In his State of the Union address, President Bush called on all Americans to
dedicate at least two years over their lifetime to service to their communities,
our country and the world. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the
country who are answering the call to service and will recognize Clark as an
example of the dedication to service he is hoping to instill in all Americans
through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.
Clark is an active volunteer with Project GRAD (Graduation Really Achieves
Dreams), a combined effort involving teachers, administrators, parents, students
and community leaders to improve inner-city education. Clark works with Project
GRAD's "Walk for Success" program, a door-to-door home visitation campaign
focused on introducing parents to the Project GRAD program and encouraging their
participation. Clark is a former president and current vice president of the
Vine Middle Magnet School Parent Teacher Association and spends time mentoring
and tutoring a fifth grade student each week.
In addition to her volunteer service, Clark works full time at Knoxville's
Promise. Knoxville's Promise is an affiliate of America's Promise, a founding
partner of the USA Freedom Corps Volunteer Network. This Network helps
individuals match their own interests and talents to more than 50,000 service
organizations.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through
the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the
call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect
our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or
by calling 1-877-USA-Corps.
