President Bush to Recognize Tampa All Sports Volunteers for Dedication to Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Tyrone Keys and Jasmine Lane when he
arrives in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, November 2. Keys, a former Tampa Bay
Buccaneer, is the founder and executive director of All Sports Community
Service, Inc. a nonprofit organization that helps at-risk youth earn
opportunities to pursue a college education. Lane, a junior at South Florida
University, volunteers full-time as a program assistant and event coordinator
for All Sports.
In his State of the Union address, President Bush called on all Americans to
dedicate at least two years over their lifetime to service to their communities,
our country and the world. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the
country who are answering the call to service and will recognize Keys and Lane
as examples of the dedication to service he is hoping to instill in all
Americans through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.
Keys, a former defensive end with the Chicago Bears, San Diego Chargers, and
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, started All Sports in 1993 to help at-risk students attend
and complete college. Through the program Tampa business and community leaders
provide mentoring, internship and volunteer service opportunities to high school
students, and help them apply for college admission and financial assistance.
Engaging students in volunteer service projects is an important part of the
programÍs design, and each participating student must dedicate at least 25 hours
to community service during each semester of college as part of their ongoing
relationship with All Sports.
Lane is a junior at South Florida University who volunteers full-time as a
program assistant and event coordinator at All Sports. Formerly a volunteer with
the Tampa Police Athletic League and the Northside Mental Health Center, Lane
now manages all office duties and coordinates community service events and
activities at All Sports.
Since 1998, Huffman has been a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sioux
Falls. Each week, Huffman meets with his ñlittle brotherî of four years to help
with schoolwork and share everyday activities. Huffman introduced his little
brother to community theater and the two of them appeared in a production last
December. Big Brothers and Big Sisters volunteers like Huffman offer supportive
relationships with caring adults to hundreds of thousands of children in 5,000
communities across the country. During high school and college, Huffman also
volunteered as a coach and referee for youth athletic programs.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through
the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the
call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect
our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or
by calling 1-877-USA-Corps.
