President Bush to Recognize San Jose Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Steve Houck upon arrival in Santa Clara, California, on Friday, May 2, 2003. Since joining Salesforce.com in 2002, Houck has spent more than 125 hours serving his community with support from his employer.

President George W. Bush will meet Steve Houck when he arrives in Santa Clara, California, on Friday, May 2, 2003. Since joining Salesforce.com in 2002, Houck has spent more than 125 hours serving his community with support from his employer.

Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country like Houck who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Houck is a long-term volunteer, having worked with organizations including the National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Northern California, St. Leo the Great Parish and Elementary School, and the Shasta-Hanchett Park Neighborhood Association. Over the past year, he has helped community organizations through his employer’s foundation and employee volunteer program. Salesforce.com is a member of Business Strengthening America, a group of business leaders working to encourage Americans to serve their communities. The company volunteer policy offers employees up to four hours each month of paid leave for volunteer service. Houck is also involved in youth activities such as career days for high school students. His encouragement has helped double his department’s participation in volunteer programs. Through his position as a member of the Salesforce.com Foundation Steering Committee, Houck helps select community programs to receive grants from the foundation and often finds volunteer opportunities for Salesforce.com employees with these organizations.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
