President Bush to Recognize New Jersey Devils Captain and Young Volunteer for Dedication to Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Scott Stevens and Marisa Fontainhas when
he arrives in Newark, New Jersey, on Monday, June 16, 2003. Scott Stevens,
defenseman and team captain of the 2003 Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils,
volunteers his time with several civic and charitable organizations. Fontainhas,
a recent graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, received a
scholarship in 1998 from the New Jersey Nets and Devils Foundation as a result
of her volunteer service in the Newark community.
In his 2002 State of the Union address, President Bush called on all
Americans to dedicate at least two years over their lifetime in service to their
communities, our country and the world. President Bush is recognizing
individuals around the country who are answering the call to service and will
recognize Stevens and Fontainhas as examples of the dedication to service he is
hoping to instill in all Americans through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.
Interested in promoting youth achievement, Stevens is active in the Devil's
School Assembly Program, speaking in Newark schools about the value of education
and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Off the ice, Stevens also volunteers
at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newark and visits with patients and families at the
Saint Barnabas Burn Center in Livingston, New Jersey. Stevens also raises funds
for the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the
Hockey Fights Cancer program.
Fontainhas has been an active volunteer with several community service
organizations. In college, she volunteered at St. John's Soup Kitchen, preparing
sandwiches and organizing food collections. Along with members of her sorority,
Fontainhas helped refurbish a playroom at St. Rocco's, a homeless shelter for
women and children.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through
the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the
call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect
our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or
by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
