President Bush to Recognize Dallas Youth for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Dennis Roberson upon arrival in Dallas,
Texas, on Friday, July 18, 2003. Roberson, age 18, volunteers each week with
young people at the Lakewest Family YMCA.
Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA
Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their
neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the
country, like Roberson, who are answering the call to volunteer service.
Roberson has been an active volunteer at the Lakewest Family YMCA since it
opened in 2000, spending at least 15 hours each week helping young people.
Roberson volunteers to help run the YMCA technology center and teaches children
how to use the computer and the internet. Roberson also helps administer the
YMCA’s Health Rocks! program, which teaches young people, ages 8 – 12, how to
make healthy lifestyle choices and develop important life skills.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA
Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to
volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to
protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion
around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own
neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by
calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
