President Bush to Recognize Jacksonville Teen for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Daniel Trifiletti upon arrival in Jacksonville, Florida, on Tuesday, September 9, 2003. Since his freshman year, Trifiletti has volunteered as a tutor and mentor to other students at his high school.

President George W. Bush will meet Daniel Trifiletti upon arrival in Jacksonville, Florida, on Tuesday, September 9, 2003. Since his freshman year, Trifiletti has volunteered as a tutor and mentor to other students at his high school.

Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country, like Trifiletti, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

A senior at Nease High School, Trifiletti volunteers as a tutor and mentor before and after school, working with students to help them improve their academic skills. A member of his school’s National Honor Society, Trifiletti helped establish a school-wide tutoring program where members of the National Honor Society work “one-on-one” with students in grades 9-12 who may need extra assistance. As part of this program, Trifiletti meets with four students each week helping them in the areas of math and science.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
