Presidential Greetings For Participants of National Youth Service Day, 2005

I send greetings to those participating in National Youth Service Day.

The true strength of America lies in the hearts and souls of our citizens. National Youth Service Day provides a valuable opportunity for youth across our country to give their time and talents to helping those in need and strengthening our communities. By bringing care and hope to others, young people can fill their own lives with greater purpose.

I have called on every American to commit to a lifetime of volunteer service. And I created the USA Freedom Corps to help Americans answer the call. Over the last 3 years, USA Freedom Corps has produced tremendous growth in volunteer service opportunities. Thanks to these efforts and the generosity of the American people, we have seen a sustained increase in volunteer service, particularly among young people.

I applaud all those who are participating in National Youth Service Day, and I encourage you to continue your commitment to service throughout the year and throughout your lives. I also commend event organizers for your hard work. Your dedication is helping build a culture of compassion, citizenship, and responsibility in America.

Laura and I send our best wishes.

George W. Bush
