Washington, DC - The Corporation for National and Community Service invites former AmeriCorps members to apply for the Eli Segal Fellowship, a yearlong leadership position working on national service policy, operations, and strategy in the agency CEO’s office.

The fellowship is named after the late Eli Segal, who was a key architect of the 1993 national service legislation and served as the first CEO of the Corporation from 1993 to 1995. Segal passed away in February 2006.

“Eli Segal was a giant in national service. Because of his role in launching AmeriCorps and the Corporation, combined with the entrepreneurial spirit he showed throughout his life, this fellowship is a particularly fitting way to honor Eli’s life and work.,” said David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation.

The Eli Segal Fellow will have the opportunity to contribute to the mission of national service while working at Corporation headquarters. The high level of access given to the Eli Segal Fellow is intended to help that individual develop as a future leader while advancing national service.

Eligible applicants for the fellowship include all AmeriCorps alums who served full-time in the past three years who will be available to serve at Corporation headquarters starting in September. Exceptions to the three-year limit may be made for candidates who have been in school full-time since serving in AmeriCorps, or who have been in military or other national service such as Peace Corps.

“AmeriCorps members show a great deal of passion and commitment to national service. The Eli Segal Fellow will have those qualities while also demonstrating exceptional leadership, a social entrepreneurial spirit, and effective communication and analytical skills,” said Marlene Zakai, Director of Grants and Policy Operations, who will oversee fellowship application and selection. The Segal family will be represented in the selection process.

Fellows will carry out projects, advance their career development and gain a first-hand understanding of national service and the workings of a federal agency. Possible assignments include working on AmeriCorps Week and representing the Corporation at conferences and meetings. During the first quarter of the year, the fellow will work to identify projects on which he or she would like to work. The fellowship includes a $25,000 salary, with full benefits, for a 10-month to 12-month term.
