e-Mentoring Volunteers Needed
The YLS is teaming up with Chicago Public Schools’ Richards Career Academy to host its annual e-mentoring program. The program serves approximately 40 high school students enrolled in Law & Public Safety. Over a 16-week period, lawyer volunteers commit to participating in a January 28 kick-off lunch at the CBA, a weekly email exchange, a mid-term visit to Richards Career Academy, and a May closing lunch at the CBA. Topics of the e-mail exchanges include substantive legal topics in their curriculum, college/law school prep, job interviewing, and the practice of law. Donate Gift Cards to Aid Battered Women
The CBA Alliance for Women is hosting a gift card collection drive to benefit the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women's Network Winter Stock-Up Drive. Members are asked to donate gift cards of any denomination which will be distributed to local domestic violence shelters. Help individuals leaving violent homes stock up on clothing, bedding and other needed personal items. Gift cards can be mailed through January 31, 2009, to either Melissa Dickey, Jenner & Block, 330 N. Wabash Ave Chicago, IL 60611 or dropped off at the CBA Building (or mailed), care of Toria Emas, 321 S. Plymouth Court, Chicago, IL 60604. The YLS is teaming up with the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel to assist with their annual blood drive. Please donate on Friday, January 23, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Hinshaw & Culbertson, 222 N. LaSalle St., Suite 300. The blood drive will be run by the Heartland Blood Centers.

 

YLS Texas Hold'em Tournament Fundraiser - January 23
Join the Young Lawyers Section at its third annual Texas Hold’em Tournament for the benefit of The Chicago Bar Foundation on Friday, January 23, 2009, at The Standard Club, 320 S. Plymouth Court. Check in begins at 5:00 p.m. and play begins at 6:00 p.m. The $150 entrance fee includes a casual buffet dinner and drinks and prizes will be awarded to top players. The tournament allows for rebuys and add-ons. A Lawyer's Guide to Dealing with the Media - January 27
Join the CBA's Alliance for Women and Public Affairs Committees at a brown bag lunch to discuss dealing with the media on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, from 12:00-2:00 p.m., at the CBA. Topics include ethics of talking to the media, the reporter's role and interaction with lawyers, and how to find and work with a PR consultant and what to expect from him. Panelists will include: Jerry Crimmins, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin; Lynne Marek, The National Law Journal; Abdon Pallasch, Chicago Sun-Times; Sarina Butler, American Bar Association; James Grogan, ARDC Deputy Administrator; and Tom Ciesielka, TC Public Relations.
