Volume 7, No. 3, April 2005

Director’s Message
This week, communities across the country celebrated National Library Week. Here in Washington, D.C., First Lady Laura Bush took the opportunity Tuesday to encourage young readers. She visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library and talked with fourth-graders from Washington’s Maury Elementary School. During her visit, Mrs. Bush read from Oliver Butterworth's The Enormous Egg and introduced her Scottish terrier Miss Beazley to the students.

While at the library, Mrs. Bush was greeted by representatives of the American Library Association, who honored her for her tireless support of libraries and library workers. The ALA presented Mrs. Bush with a citation and a gift of Kitten's First Full Moon and Kira Kira, the 2005 winners of the Newberry and Caldecott medals.

Carol Brey-Casiano, president of the American Library Association and director of the El Paso Public Library in Texas, said Mrs. Bush has been “an exemplary role model to women and men considering the profession of librarianship, and she has been a consistent advocate for the importance of reading since her days in the Texas Governor's mansion. Librarians and library users everywhere owe her thanks."

We join our library colleagues in celebrating libraries and the wonderful dedication of our First Librarian, Laura Bush.

A Closer Look
Discovery, Exploration, Education, Collaboration, Public Service, Lifelong Learning. These are the characteristics of museums and libraries that truly excel in meeting the diverse needs of communities throughout the United States and its territories today. And they are embodied to an extraordinary degree by the recipients of the 2004 National Awards for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for excellence in public service provided by these important institutions. During a March 14 ceremony in Washington, D.C., First Lady Laura Bush honored the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Flint Public Library, the Mayagüez Children’s Library, the Regional Academic Health Center Medical Library, the Western Folklife Center, and the Zoological Society of San Diego for the vital role they play in strengthening communities. Read all about it in this month’s Highlight at http://www.imls.gov/closer/hlt_c0405.htm.
