Brain-Powered Playground Meets Cutting Edge Classroom at OMSI
One of the winners of the 2007 National Medal for Museum Service, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is part brain-powered playground for kids and adults, part cutting-edge classroom for communities across the state. Visitors to the museum can touch a tornado, uncover a fossil, surf the Internet, enter the world of virtual reality, experience an earthquake, or simply experiment on their own in one of the many hands-on labs. Director's Message

Image of Dr. Anne-Imelda RadiceThe 2008 WebWise conference is right around the corner. The annual late winter WebWise Conference draws museum, library, information systems, and other professionals to explore new research and innovation in digital technology. The 2008 conference, co-hosted by IMLS and The Wolfsonian–Florida International University (The Wolfsonian–FIU), with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, highlights the growing convergence between libraries and museums in collection and information management.

As usual, the free WebWise Conference is “sold out.” There is extraordinary interest in this year’s conference theme: "WebWise 2.0: The Power of Community." The definition of Web 2.0 is still evolving but it generally refers to digital applications that encourage users to add value through participation. Blogs, wikis, ebay, craiglist, and virtual reality games are all part of this universe. But what does Web 2.0 mean to museums, libraries, and archives? On March 7, Jeffrey T. Schnapp, director of the Stanford Humanities Lab and a WebWise keynote speaker, will explore the ways in which Web 2.0 offers new possibilities for museums and libraries. He will explore novel approaches to conservation and preservation based upon increasing access to the objects and artifacts of the past; participant-created content and curatorship; and approaches to programming and informal education that expand traditional library and museum audiences.

At WebWise, I will also have the pleasure of officially releasing results of a significant IMLS-funded study on museums, libraries, and the Internet. For now, the details are under wraps but the news is important and thought provoking. Stay tuned.

- Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Ph.D., Director, IMLS

2008 WebWise Conference Participants Encouraged to Contribute to Blog, Wiki, and Facebook
Reflecting the conference theme of “WebWise 2.0: The Power of Community,” a number of Web 2.0 tools have been developed in conjunction with the 2008 WebWise Conference. Available through the Conference website (http://webwise2008.fcla.edu), registrants can access a wiki containing definitions of Web 2.0 tools and software. By posting to the wiki, users can edit or contribute new definitions, websites, or examples of other Web 2.0 technologies.

The WebWise blog is also accessible through the WebWise Conference Web site. This tool enables registered participants to discuss posted articles about Web 2.0 developments that have been selected for their relevance to the museum and library community. During the WebWise Conference, participants will be able to use the blog to comment on individual speakers and sessions.

While the blog and wiki are restricted to participants of the WebWise Conference, non-registrants can read a definition or learn about the history of the conference on Wikipedia. The “WebWise Conference” Facebook group, which is also accessible to all, provides a forum for users to communicate before, during, and after the event. Following the WebWise Conference, webcasts and videos of full conference proceedings will be available online – check www.imls.gov/webwise for updated information.

Reminder: Update Your CCR Registration Regularly
If you currently have an IMLS grant or plan to apply at any time in the future, remember that all IMLS grantees and applicants must be registered with Grants.gov and with the Central Contractor Registry (CCR). See www.grants.gov for information.

Once registered, you must renew your CCR registration at least once a year. You are responsible for updating all your registration information as it changes, and for ensuring that all information in your Dun and Bradstreet (D&B) and IRS registrations is up to date and reflected in your CCR registration. See the CCR Handbook, page four, for details. We strongly recommend that you register at least two weeks before your anticipated IMLS application deadline, and renew at least every six months to avoid last-minute problems.

Because D&B now automatically inputs your institution’s Legal Business Name and Physical Address into your CCR registration from, it is your responsibility to keep this information updated at D&B. You may use the Web at http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform to search, revise information, or request a DUNS number.
Reminder: Microsoft Vista and Word 2007 users
