Fred P. DuVal named to the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Foundation by President Clinton
News Releases - 1/30/2001
Fred P. DuVal, a senior Managing Director of Hill & Knowlton, was named to the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Foundation by President Clinton.

Mr. DuVal has extensive experience in government affairs, public relations and advertising. From 1996 to 2000, he served as Clinton’s deputy assistant for intergovernmental affairs. In 1996, he directed VIP operations for the inauguration after having served as deputy campaign manager and director of vice presidential operations of the Clinton/Gore campaign. He was deputy chief of protocol at the State Department from 1993 to 1996. He also worked in various capacities with former Arizona governor and secretary of the interior, Bob Babbitt whose political action committee he directed and whose1998 presidential election campaign he managed.

“As a member of the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Foundation, I hope to assist the IAF in building bipartisan support for its innovative and effective problem-solving techniques. The IAF's support for self-help programs designed by the poor themselves has broad applicability ― both domestically and internationally,” Mr. DuVal noted.

Congress created the IAF in 1969 as an alternative to traditional government-to-government assistance. It provides American assistance to the poor of Latin America and the Caribbean, financing self-help projects designed by their organizations. Since 1971, the IAF has funded more than 4,300 such projects in 32 countries. Many include a wide range of partners, among them multi-national and local businesses, municipalities, nongovernmental organizations and universities. The IAF seeks out innovative development ideas. It was the first official development organization, for example, to support community projects financed in part by remittances sent home by workers who have migrated to the United States.
