Publication History

As the Coast and Geodetic Survey became more well-known and as other Government agencies, academia, and commercial organizations requested information regarding C&GS technology and methods, the concept of Special Publications came about to fulfill this need. Prior to development of the Special Publications Series, information regarding geodetic, hydrographic, geophysical, and oceanographic methods was published in the Annual Reports of the Superintendent, but finding the required information became cumbersome as the various works were spread throughout the reports in an almost haphazard fashion. The Special Publications provided a concise and efficient method of disseminating this necessary information.

Scope of coverage

This work represents the scientific research by the C&GS using geodetic, hydrographic, geophysical and oceanographic methods.

How to Locate Special Publications

To display the publication you wish to see, click on the drop-down list to the left, choose the publication number and year, then click the "View Publication" button. To find the title associated with each Special Publication number a searchable index, Coast & Geodetic Survey Special Publications, complied by Grace C. Sollers is included as a finding aide.

The following Special Publications are missing from our collection: 55, 64, 72, 94, 102, 116 and 248.

The earthquake and fire of 1906 destroyed nearly all the range objects used in Special Publication No. 1 (1898), entitled: "California, Bay of San Francisco, Magnetic Ranges for Determining the Deviation of the Compass, with Short Explanations of How to Find the Deviation and Error of the Compass," and rendered the original publication of little or no value. In 1920 a new edition was created by Fremont Morse, inspector of the San Francisco field station, under the recommendation of E. Lester Jones, Director, Coast & Geodetic Survey.

Plane Coordinate Intersection Tables (2 1/2-Minute) by State, printed as Publication 65-1 Parts 1 through 52, not Special Publications, are available with this collection. Publication 62-3 is the second revision of Special Publication No. 158, Bilby Steel Tower for Triangulation, which was published originally in 1929 and first revised in 1940. This publication contains many additional details regarding the construction and dismantlement of Bilby towers that were not covered in the 1940 edition.
