Regional Research Advisory Groups

Five Regional Research Advisory Groups, established by EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER), provide advice to develop and prioritize Superfund research needs in the Agency, between the Office of Research and Development (ORD) and regional offices.

Members are from various EPA Offices:

The primary task for the advisory groups is to review the research needs and current research in the Land Research Program by topics and rank them for their feasibility and timeliness in three categories: high, medium, or low.

There are five advisory groups:

  1. Sediment: Bonnie Eleder, Region 5, Chair Topics: Ecological effects, modeling, sampling, monitoring, and remedy-specific research; Superfund Sediment Resource Center; Ecological Risk Assessment Center.
  2. Ground Water: Bernie Zavala Region 10, Chair. Topics: Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA), dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL), and vapor intrusion (VI) research; Ground Water Technical Support Center.
  3. Engineering, Containment, and Soil Treatment: Bernie Zavala Region 10, Acting Chair. Topics: soil containment and treatment; landfill covers, gas, and liners; Engineering Technical Support Center.
  4. Site Characterization and Methods: Joel Hennessy Region 3, Chair. Tasks: sampling techniques, analysis methods, and statistics; Monitoring and Site Characterization Technical Support Center; Environmental Photographic Interpretation Center.
  5. Human Health Risk Assessment: Chair – TBD. Topics: Research conducted by ORD's National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA).
