WED Scientist Receives National Water Quality Monitoring Council Award

Tony Olsen of NHEERL’s Western Ecology Division (WED) received the 2008 Elizabeth Jester Fellows Award from the National Water Quality Monitoring Council (NWQMC) at its biennial national conference in Atlantic City, NJ, May 19-22. The NWQMC established the award to recognize individuals for outstanding achievement, exemplary service, and distinguished leadership in the field of water quality monitoring. In presenting the award, the NWQMC cited the following.

“Dr. Olsen is the chief architect behind monitoring programs that characterize water quality using randomly selected sampling sites. Such programs, after difficult beginnings, are now fundamental to monitoring water quality in the United States. Dr. Olsen has been instrumental in designing the National Aquatic Resource Inventories, the western states’ probabilistic monitoring strategy, and the joint EPA/Environment Canada monitoring strategy for Lake Superior, among many other projects. His work has also been the technical anchor for the designs adopted in the National Water Quality Monitoring Network for U.S. Coastal Waters and their Tributaries. Dr. Olsen is an energetic teacher of the principles of monitoring design and statistical analysis. His many visits to state offices and other Federal agencies, his patient explanation of the concepts of statistics, and his willingness to help with even the most minor problems has endeared him to a very large portion of the monitoring community.”
