NHEERL Scientists Partner with Region 8 and NCEA on Asbestos Risk Assessment Meeting

NHEERL is working with Region 8 and the National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) to improve the scientific basis for the risk assessment of asbestos contamination of Libby, MT. NHEERL’s toxicology studies will help define key determinants of internal dose, provide critical insights on mechanisms and key pathology end points, and lay the foundation for construction of a framework that more effectively links exposures to effects. NCEA, along with Region 8, is developing a site-specific reference concentration (RfC) for the risk assessment of Libby asbestos. The goal of the late April meeting in Research Triangle Park, NC, was to foster collaboration between the two organizations to ensure that the work being done in NHEERL is integrated into the risk assessment process at NCEA. The meeting participants discussed the RfC and the Integrated Risk Information System development processes, the model structure being used to characterize the epidemiological studies for the cancer risk assessment, the dosimetery modeling and mode-of-action framework, the mechanistic aspects of Libby asbestos toxicity based on current literature, and the current data gaps that NHEERL will address with its studies.
