Background/History of the Laboratory:

The Environmental Laboratory is the problem solver for the Corps and the Nation in environmental science and engineering research and development in support of environmental systems. The staff supports the environmental missions of the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, and the Nation through research, development, special studies, and technology transfer. Environmental Laboratory research includes a network of expertise and facilities from other Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and Corps Laboratories, other government agencies, academia, and private sector.

Mission of the Laboratory:

The mission of the Environmental Laboratory encompasses: Environmental Quality investigations related to water resources development and navigation projects, management and delineation of wetlands, investigations of reservoir, riverine, and coastal water quality problems, management of natural and cultural resources, and cleanup of contaminated soils and sediments. The Environmental laboratory is also the DoD leader for Installation Restoration (Cleanup) research as part of the Environmental Quality Science and Technology Plan. These technology areas include site characterization, groundwater modeling, environmental effects, unexploded ordnance, contaminant fate and effects, and terrestrial and aquatic assessment.
