What is the purpose of the Task Force?

The interagency Transportation Infrastructure Streamlining Task Force oversees the implementation of E.O. 13274. The Task Force is charged with the following tasks:

  • Select high-priority transportation projects to undergo expedited environmental reviews and monitor the progress of those reviews. More information on the priority projects selected by the Task Force is available on the Priority Projects page.
  • Identify and promote policies that can effectively streamline the environmental review process for transportation infrastructure projects while promoting environmental stewardship. The Task Force has created three Work Groups to develop recommendations regarding three aspects of the environmental review process.

Who sits on the Task Force?

The Task Force consists of the heads of the eight Federal agencies that have key roles in the environmental review of transportation infrastructure projects. The Task Force is chaired by the Department of Transportation. E.O. 13274 allows each agency head to designate a high-level official to represent the agency at Task Force meetings. The agencies and their designees are as follows:

  • Department of Transportation - Secretary Mary Peters or Under Secretary for Policy Jeffrey Shane
  • Council on Environmental Quality - Chairman Jim Connaughton or Edward Boling, General Counsel
  • Department of Agriculture - Barbara C. Robinson, Deputy Administrator for Transportation and Marketing Programs
  • Department of Commerce - Jim Walpole, General Counsel, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
  • Department of Interior - Paul Hoffman, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks
  • Department of Defense - John Paul Woodley, Assistant Secretary for the Army (Civil Works)
  • Environmental Protection Agency - Granta Nakayama, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance
  • Advisory Council on Historic Preservation - John Nau, Chairman
