US 93 Corridor - Montana

Montana’s US 93 corridor, roughly 288 miles long, extends from the Idaho border in the south to the Canadian border in the north. The corridor is a heavily traveled National Highway System route that traverses an aesthetically appealing and rapidly growing section of Montana. Capacity and safety improvements were proposed along the length of the corridor, and construction has begun on particular segments.

A Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was prepared for the 11.2-mile section of US 93 in the vicinity of the town of Ronan and the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge. The Supplemental EIS addressed environmental, cultural, and social concerns that were not previously evaluated. The Final EIS was published in March 2008, and a Record of Decision was signed in May 2008.

The section of US 93 from Evaro to Polson, traverses a number of wetlands, so construction along this section required a wetlands mitigation strategy. Because this segment of the highway is contained almost entirely within the Flathead Indian Reservation, development of this strategy required negotiations between the federal government and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes who live on the reservation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes have agreed to an ecosystem-based compensatory wetland mitigation plan that includes on-site and off-site mitigation within the watershed and on the reservation.
