United Way giving campaign ends Tuesday

Employees can pledge online

Laboratory workers have through the end of the work day on Tuesday to pledge or make a donation to the 2007 United Way giving campaign.

The Laboratory's "United in a New Way" 2007 giving campaign has raised about $551,000 in pledges, donations, and special events through last Friday.

The Lab's campaign goal is $1 million. Los Alamos National Security, LLC, which operates the Laboratory, plans to match employee contributions up to $1 million.

"Laboratory employees have repeatedly shown their care and concern for those in the communities where we live and work," said Lillian Montoya-Rael, Community Programs Office (CPO) leader. "Our goal in this year's campaign is ambitious, but we are confident that by working together we can achieve it. More importantly, by doing so we will be helping those United Way agencies that help others. "

Lab employees can pledge online or complete their hardcopy pledge form and return it to Mail Stop P232.

The pledge form has testimonials from directors of agencies that receive United Way funds.

"United Way is providing essential services to low-income senior adults throughout the whole EspaƱola Valley area through Amigos del Valle," said Rev. Dennis Heffner, executive director. "Providing various levels of care for 200 seniors so they can remain in their own homes with safety and dignity is our goal. Thanks to many generous people and the Laboratory, together we make a huge difference for these people."

Las Clinicas del Norte Executive Director Andy Lopez added, "Through your generosity, Las Clinicas del Norte was able to provide dental services to 750 Northern New Mexico Children."

And Los Alamos Family YMCA Executive Director Linda Daly said that through the generosity of Lab employees, more than 60 children were able to participate in the Family YMCA's after school program and summer camp this year. "Thanks Los Alamos National Lab employees for giving these children enriching field trips, drama, sports, new friends, and for giving their parents peace of mind."

The community giving campaign, "Real Lives, Real Impact," also is under way concurrent with the Lab's giving campaign. The community campaign is scheduled to end in November.
