Elk, bear, and deer are on the move

By Ed Vigil

October 26, 2006

Employees should use caution

Laboratory employees and motorists should keep an eye out for wildlife on Lab property and roadways, especially during this time of the year when they begin their seasonal migration from the high country to lower elevations near the Laboratory and Los Alamos.

During the shorter winter days and the commute to and from work, drivers need to be careful, especially during the twilight hours of early evening when deer and elk can be found grazing on the sides of local roads.

Roads aren’t the only place where employees might encounter a visitor of the wild kind. Wildlife also can be found looking for food on Laboratory property at various technical sites.

Employees with concerns about wildlife on Lab property can contact Emergency Response (ER) Division at 7-6211. General animal sightings can be reported to James Biggs of the Risk Reduction Office (ENV-RRO) at 5-5714 or to Leslie Hansen of Ecology and Air Quality (ENV-EAQ) at 5-9873.
