Revised management guidance on salary increase authorization process

September 15, 2006

Laboratory managers received revised guidance on this year’s salary management process, which has been extended to September 28.

The new requirements will not affect the timing of pay adjustments scheduled to take effect on October 1.

Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio said in a master management memo that the annual salary review process is used to "manage salaries (not raises) with a goal of rewarding the best performers with higher salaries relative to their peers." He said an algorithm developed for this process was intended to achieve this goal and help ensure consistency and fairness across the Laboratory. Upon determining this was not the case, the algorithm was revised that should serve as a guide.

“I apologize for any difficulty or hardship this change may have caused,” Anastasio said, “but this process is too important to each employee of this Laboratory not to do it right.”
