It’s a Celebration … and you’re invited

May 17, 2006

Come join the fun at the Laboratory’s celebration of the University of California’s 63 years of service to the nation through its management of the Laboratory.

“Celebrating an Era with Pride and Honor” is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Technical Area 3. All Laboratory workers, including subcontract personnel and their families and friends; retirees; elected officials; and other invited guests can take part in a day of exhibits, entertainment, food and fun.

The highlight of the celebration is the dedication of the new National Security Sciences Building (NSSB) at TA-3, which will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours of the facility and the unveiling in the NSSB courtyard of a piece from the Pentagon building that was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001.

The parking garage east of the Otowi Building will be closed beginning at 6 p.m., Thursday through Sunday (May 21) for event preparation. Private vehicles left in the garage will be removed. Government vehicles may be left in the garage, but can not be moved in or out during this closure. Government vehicles left on surface lots in the area will be moved.

This parking garage reopens on Monday, May 22.

Laboratory personnel who work at TA-3 have alternative parking locations available, including the west parking structure near the SM-30 Warehouse, and surface parking lots near the intersection of Diamond Drive and East Jemez Road and Diamond Drive and Pajarito Road. On Friday, the small, short-term parking lot immediately east of the Otowi Building will be temporarily designated as handicapped parking only.

All badge holders, including subcontract personnel, will be given free food tickets for themselves and up to five guests — the University of California is providing the food. Retirees attending the event also will be issued free food tickets and can bring up to five guests. The meal includes a hamburger, hot dog or veggie burger; potato chips; cookies; and a soft drink or water.

Los Alamos Big Band, The Nomads, Jan McDonald Brass Quartet and Nosotros are scheduled to provide musical entertainment. A children’s dance company from Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, Ice Mountain Dance Group, also will perform.

The Laboratory logo store will be on hand to sell caps, T-shirts and other Laboratory logo merchandise. Proceeds will benefit the Northern New Mexico Math and Science Academy.
