Trails management meeting this evening in White Rock

December 6, 2005

The public can learn about the management of trails within the Laboratory at a meeting today in White Rock. The meeting is at 5 p.m., at the White Rock Town Hall Building, 139 Longview Drive.

The meeting is hosted by the Lab's Cultural Resources team in Ecology (ENV-ECO). In December 2003, the Trails Assessment Working Group was established to inventory, map and prepare historical reports on many trails that have been used on the Pajarito Plateau. Some of these are ancient ancestral pueblo footpaths that continue to be used for recreational hiking today.

The working group consists of representatives from the Laboratory, local citizen hiking groups, Los Alamos County, the U.S. Forest Service, Park Service and the Los Alamos Site Office of the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Based on public comments and input from numerous federal agencies and local pueblos, the group has provided recommendations ranging from construction and repair to closure, depending on the trail. Experts will present their findings at the meeting.

Two interpretive talks also are scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Call Dan Pava of ENV-ECO at 7-7360 for more information regarding today's meeting and the talks.
