School supplies drive extended to Aug. 8

Tax amnesty for certain purchases

If helping students with supplies for the upcoming school year isn't satisfaction enough, here's another incentive: pay no state gross receipts tax on purchases.

The Laboratory's school supplies collection drive is being extended through Aug. 8 because the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department has declared Aug. 5-7 as "Back to School" gross receipts tax holiday. During these three days, residents can purchase school supplies typically used in a classroom setting, some clothing and footwear, computers under $1,000 and computer equipment less than $500 from participating merchants and not have to pay state gross receipts tax.

The tax amnesty is good at participating retailers, according to the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department.

The Lab's school supplies collection drive was scheduled to end Friday. Collection points are the Otowi Building cafeteria lobby at Technical Area 3, the Access Center at TA-55, the Engineering Sciences and Applications (ESA) Division Office at TA-16 and at the Community Relations (CRO) Office on Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos. Supplies collected will be distributed to 20 schools in the EspaƱola, Los Alamos, Mesa Vista, Pojoaque and Santa Fe school districts, said Debbi Wersonick of CRO, coordinator of workplace giving programs at the Lab.

For more information, see the July 13 Daily Newsbulletin or call Wersonick at 7-7870.
