Safety successes lauded at test site dedication

May 27, 2005

Kathy Carlson, standing at podium, manager of the National Nuclear Security Administration's Nevada Site Office, speaks to workers and visitors assembled at the site Wednesday for dedication of the new U1h conveyance system and hoist house. The 20-foot-diameter, concrete-lined shaft extends nearly 1,000 feet beneath the desert and will improve safety and operational efficiency at the Los Alamos-managed U1a Complex, site of U.S. subcritical experiments. The shaft and associated facilities were excavated and built by Bechtel Nevada, management and operations contractor for NTS. Among others attending the dedication were John McAfee, seated wearing hard hat, of the Dynamic Experimentation (DX) Division, representing Laboratory management, and Jim Powell, seated left, Bechtel Nevada general manager. Powell presented Bechtel Nevada miners with certificates honoring them for three and five years free of reportable injuries. The certificates from the James A. Holmes Safety Association Professional Miner Program represent a major achievement in the mining industry.
