Lab workers recognized for pollution prevention successes

April 29, 2005

Jeff Abes, left, of Gas Transfer Systems (ESA-GTS), accepts a 2005 Pollution Prevention award from Ken Hargis of the Environmental Stewardship (ENV) Division and Carolyn Mangeng, center, acting associate director for the Technical Services (ADTS) Directorate at Thursday's award ceremony. Abes and the team of Bruce Wilkinson of ESA-GTS and Kevin Honnell of Material Science (X-7) received a Pollution Prevention award for their project "Replacement of Beryllium-Copper Snap Ring." The team found a nonhazardous substitute for a particular type of snap ring used in shipping. The stainless steel ring replaced a beryllium snap ring, which posed a safety risk. Thirty-nine employee teams were recognized at the ceremony. The Pollution Prevention Awards recognize the pollution prevention successes of individuals and teams that have minimized waste; conserved water, electricity or natural gas; reduced air or water pollution; procured products with recycled content; applied sustainable design elements or projects; used the Leadership Energy Environmental Design criteria to design a new facility; or helped in other ways to meet Department of Energy Pollution Prevention Goals for 2005. The awards are sponsored by ENV Division. A list of the Pollution Prevention Award winners can be found at http://p2.lanl.gov/source/orgs/p/p2/P2Awards/index.shtml online.
