Online program matches students, Lab summer job opportunities

By Public Affairs Office

November 20, 2002

Students can now find summer opportunities at the Laboratory that are better suited for them through a new program developed by the Education Program Office (STB-EPO) called the Student Postings Initiative. Through this online program, students click on "match criteria" and the database will search job postings at the Laboratory. Mentors benefit from the program because they are able to post job openings on the Web site and review possible candidates, said Rick Alexander of STB-EPO.

There are two Web sites: an internal site, http://spi-internal.lanl.gov/spi/mentor for current Laboratory employees; and an external site, http://spi-external.lanl.gov/ for students both inside and outside the Lab. The Web sites are currently operational.

The internal sites for mentors will require Crypto Cards for authentications. The external site will require the student applicant to create a userID profile. STB created this program to support the Lab's students pipeline and future efforts in hiring new employees, to match quality students with meaningful co-op and summer internships and to list student opportunities to a large audience, said Alexander.

"We need to identify more mentors and post more student positions. As more mentors adjust to a new way of finding quality students, we believe that the site will grow and will help mentors find students who can contribute to their groups' work in a meaningful way," said Alexander.
