Robot Rodeo tests emergency response skills

May 24, 2007

A robot pours water into a measuring cup at the Robot Rodeo at Technical Area 49. Four bomb squad teams are competing in the first Robot Rodeo, hosted by the Los Alamos Hazardous Device Team. The teams were challenged by ten different scenarios, including a skills test made fun by an obstacle course. In one test, a robot carries a glass of water over a bed of rubber tires. The teams then poured the water into the measuring cup, garnering points for the amount of water in the cup. Other tests include carrying an egg over two horizontal ladders.

"This event gives bomb squad teams the ability to practice and hone their skills in a fun setting," said Chris Ory of Response Services, Hazardous Device team member.

Jenise Dahlin of Emergency Planning and Preparedness is judging the performance of a Las Vegas, Nevada team trying to insert the key into the lock. Competing teams included the Los Alamos Police Department and Laboratory Hazardous Device Team, the New Mexico State Police, the Albuquerque Police Department and the Las Vegas, Nevada Police Department. The Robot Rodeo continues through Friday.
