Sign up now for electro mechanical training program

April 9, 2007

April 20 is deadline

The Education and Postdoc Programs Office (STB/EPO) needs participants, mentors, and sponsors for its electro mechanical technician training program at the University of New Mexico, Los Alamos.

The two-year work study program provides training for students in electronics, drafting, and basic engineering principles. The program was started at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) several years ago, but has been expanded to include the entire Laboratory, said Brenda Montoya of STB-EPDO.

The application deadline is April 20.

Individuals selected will be mentored by a Laboratory technical staff member. Lab mentors will evaluate all program participants for content knowledge, work performance and progress. A portion of the student employee's work day is spent at UNM-LA attending courses designed for and related to their Laboratory job.

Tuition, books and fees of participants will be reimbursed at the end of each semester as long as student-employees maintain a minimum grade-point average of 2.0, Montoya explained.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a certificate in electro mechanical technology, and continued employment at the Lab is a possibility dependent on the availability of a position, funding and positive evaluations, she said.

For more information about the application process, contact Yohanna Wiuff of UNM-LA, at 662-0341 or 1-800-894-5919, ext. 341.
