King County seeks ‘Waste Free Holidays’ partners

Deadline for businesses to partner in annual promotion is Oct. 1

King County Solid Waste Division invites businesses and organizations that offer "experience gifts" to join its award-winning waste prevention program, Waste Free Holidays.

Now in its 13th year, this program encourages residents to "give an experience instead of stuff" to help reduce the amount of waste people usually generate during the bountiful box and wrapping paper laden holiday season. That’s when Americans throw away 25 percent more trash than any other time of the year. The program offers consumers a great opportunity to shop locally, save money and waste less during the holiday season.

Waste Free Holidays participating businesses save money, too. There is no cost for businesses to participate, other than providing a discounted offer to customers. Participating partners offer discounts of at least 15 percent on gift certificates or other services from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. King County promotes Waste Free Holidays - and partner businesses - with an extensive regional media campaign.

In 2007, more than 140 King County businesses and organizations participated, offering discounts from 15 to 50 percent on tickets, memberships, or gift certificates for concerts, plays, sporting events, recreation, museums, restaurants, massages and other "experience" gifts.

If your business is interested in becoming a partner this year, please visit the Waste Free Holidays Web site at www.wastefreeholidays.com (external link) to apply. Click on the King County/Seattle section, and then click on "Apply to Join WFH." The deadline for applications is Oct. 1. King County reserves the right to limit participation.
