Household hazardous waste collections continue July 4 with King County Wastemobile

King County’s popular program enters 19th year of safeguarding environment

King County residents can keep their home environment clean and safe this summer by taking their household hazardous waste to the Wastemobile, which makes stops in Kenmore on July 4-6, then in Federal Way on July 11-13.

The Wastemobile will be at the Kenmore Park and Ride at 7346 NE Bothell Way, followed by a stop at the Federal Way Sears, 1701 S. 320th St. These events are followed by another Wastemobile stop at the Kent Fred Meyer, July 25-27. Additional stops in King County communities are scheduled later this summer.

In its 19th year of providing a free, safe and convenient way of disposing of household waste items, including pesticides, chlorine bleach, oil-based paints, automotive products (oil, antifreeze, auto batteries, etc.) and fluorescent bulbs/ballasts, the Wastemobile is operated by King County as part of the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program.

Created in 1989, the Wastemobile was the first program of its kind in the nation. In its 18 years in operation, the program collected more than 14,771 tons of household hazardous waste from nearly 329,000 King County residents, who are helping safeguard the environment by properly disposing of these materials and keeping them out of drains and landfills.

Latex paint is one item that will no longer be accepted during household hazardous waste collection events. Research has shown that dried or solidified latex paint can be safely disposed through the regular solid waste process.

For more information, including acceptable materials and quantity limits, call the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program’s Hazards Line at 206-296-4692, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., except holidays.
