Companies earn environmental awards for complying with King County regulations

Four companies recently earned top environmental compliance awards for meeting or exceeding King County's water quality permit regulations in 2007. The county also presented environmental awards to 74 other companies.

Companies earning the top Commitment-to-Compliance Award are Arco/BP Petroleum Products Co., Seattle; Avtech Corp., Seattle; Boeing Commercial Airplane, Renton; and Glacier Northwest Inc. in Kenmore.

The Commitment-to-Compliance Award honors companies that have protected public health and the environment by discharging wastewater every month for five years with no violations of any kind.

The county's Industrial Waste Program also presented a Gold Award to 56 companies for discharging wastewater every month in 2007 with no violations. And 18 companies earned a Silver Award for having no discharge monitoring violations in 2007.

King County's industrial waste regulations protect public health and the environment by preventing businesses from discharging substances that can degrade wastewater treatment, harm workers, damage facilities or reduce surface-water quality.

Since 1969, the Industrial Waste Program has required many industries to pretreat wastewater before discharging it into the sewer. The program does more than enforce regulations, however. It also helps businesses meet regulations by educating them about pollution prevention, waste reduction and water reuse.
