Choose your fun from two activity-packed weeks in King County Parks – Your Big Backyard

Summer doesn’t start for a few more weeks, but don’t let that keep you from getting outside and playing in King County Parks  – “Your Big Backyard.”

Get active in any of the dozens of King County Parks locations. Whether it’s participating in a trail run at the 3,000-acre Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park, attending an open-air concert at Marymoor Park, King County offers lots of fun activities for the whole family.

Here’s a partial list of what’s happening during the next two weeks at King County Parks – Your Big Backyard:

Marymoor Park

June 5 and June 14

Concerts at Marymoor

Listen to some of your favorite artists at Marymoor Park – one of the most-popular open-air venues around. The concert series gets under way this Thursday, June 5, with a performance by Erykah Badu and The Roots. On June 14, 107.7 The End’s Summer Camp II packs the stage with a diverse line-up of artists, including Flogging Molly, Pennywise, Nada Surf and more. And just added for later in summer, Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow will take the Marymoor stage on Aug. 30, with special guest James Blunt. $5 parking fee. Marymoor Recycling Crew

Volunteer to promote recycling and composting and help keep the Concerts at Marymoor venue clean. In exchange for their work to safeguard the environment, Recycling Crew volunteers receive free entry and parking to the shows at which they volunteer. A minimum commitment of three concerts is preferred, and shift hours vary depending on show times. Training will be provided on site. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, and service learning credit is available. Details are available by contacting Marymoor Park, at 206-205-3661, or marymoorpark@kingcounty.gov. Include your name, contact information, telephone number, and how you heard about volunteering, and identify the shows for which you are interested in volunteering.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday night racing at the Marymoor Velodrome

Enjoy an exciting bicycle race at the Velodrome, presented by Group Health. With all three nights of racing are under way for the season. Spectator admission is free. Racing starts at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. For more information, visit www.velodrome.org/cms/.

Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park

June 14

Cougar Mountain Running Series

Compete in the sixth-annual Cougar Mountain trail running series, featuring a seven-mile race on June 14. Additional races follow July 12 with a 10-miler and finish with a 13-mile race on Aug. 9. The registration and start will be at the Sky Country trailhead. Cost is $25 per race ($30 for day-of-race registration). Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center

18th Annual Flag Day Celebration

King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer and the Federal Way Soroptimists host the 18th Annual Flag Day Celebration on the veranda of the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Featuring Rep. Adam Smith as the keynote speaker, the event also includes special presentations to honor local members of the military and King County Police and Fire and Rescue squads. Entertainment will be provided by Team Idols, directed by Loren Libby, and the Thomas Jefferson High School Band. The ceremony is free.

Tolt MacDonald Park

Yurt Camping

Enjoy a unique camping experience with friends and family in one of the fully furnished yurts at Tolt MacDonald Park. Each yurt sleeps up to seven people and comes with a double/single bunk bed a night stand, and two double futons. Daily rates are $40 or $240 weekly. Yurts are available by reservation only.
