Two King County performance reports honored with prestigious national accountability award

Performance Report AwardsRecognizing excellence in government accountability, public transparency and performance reporting, the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) will honor King County with the national Certificate of Excellence in Service Efforts and Accomplishments (SEA) Award for accountability reports.

The award-winning reports are King County’s Executive Branch-produced King County AIMs High: Annual Indicators and Measures (available online at: www.metrokc.gov/AIMsHigh), and the Department of Natural Resources and Parks’ KingStat Website (http://metrokc.gov/dnrp/measures/).

King County received the awards during a County Council’s Utilities and Parks Committee meeting on Tuesday. The county was similarly honored with national awards for performance measurement reporting from the AGA in 2007.

“These awards confirm that we are on the right track in demonstrating accountability and transparency in government,” said King County Executive Ron Sims. “Performance measures are one of the best tools government has for assessing our effectiveness in delivering vital public services.”

Each report won a Certificate of Excellence for performance measure reporting and communicating results to the public. This is the second consecutive award for King County AIMs High. The Department of Natural Resources and Parks has been honored with this national award for four consecutive years. Winners of the Certificate of Excellence SEA Award must meet 16 suggested criteria to be eligible for the award; fewer than 20 state and local governments have won the award in 2008.

“Governments strive to issue performance reports that are not only complete and comprehensive, but also interesting, informative and inviting to read,” said AGA Executive Director Relmond P. Van Daniker, DBA, CPA. “King County has created not one, but two reports that effectively inform readers of their performance and effectiveness of services. Not only are they working hard, but they are also achieving these sought-after goals.”

AGA collaborated with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, granting funds to launch the Certificate of Excellence in Service Efforts and Accomplishments Reporting Program. The program offers in-depth evaluation of SEA reports, performance reports, recommendations for improvements and recognition of excellent reports. The SEA program encourages state and local governments to effectively communicate their performance to the public.

The AGA is a 15,000-member professional association that serves government accountability professionals by providing quality education, fostering professional development and certification, and supporting standards and research to advance government accountability.
