Voters say ‘I do’ to ‘The Wedding Singer’ for Movies@Marymoor viewer’s choice show

Aug. 27 show wraps up fourth-annual outdoor movie series

It was close, but Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore’s romantic comedy edged past Kevin Bacon’s push to bring dancing to a small town high school prom and a young New Zealand girl’s quest to become chief of her people to take top honors as King County Parks’ Movies@Marymoor “Viewer’s Choice” winner.

Every Wednesday evening since mid-July at King County’s Marymoor Park, moviegoers have lined up their blankets, low-backed chairs and picnics to enjoy films shown as part of the popular outdoor cinema series.

New this year was the “Viewer’s Choice” movie, where moviegoers were encouraged to vote on-line or in-person on movie nights to help select the series’ finale. Their choices were “The Wedding Singer,” “Footloose” and “Whale Rider,” and fans chose the Sandler-Barrymore story about two people who were both engaged to be married . . . to the wrong people.

“The Wedding Singer” will be shown Aug. 27 as the final movie of this fourth season of outdoor movies. Films are shown on a 30-foot by 50-foot inflatable screen, with high-quality sound supplied by Epic Events at Marymoor Park’s MacNair Field.

Seating opens at 7 p.m., and movies begin at dusk, rain or shine. Admission is free, and a donation of $5 for individuals and $15 for families is suggested and goes to support King County Parks.

Nearly 5,000 movie fans have come out to the Movies@Marymoor so far this year, making 2008 the most successful series to date. Two movies remain: “The Muppet Movie” Aug. 20, followed by “The Wedding Singer” on Aug. 27.
