Medical Emergencies

The OCAO-Boulder Health Services Unit duty hours are workdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..  For any potentially life-threatening emergency occurring during these work hours, here are the procedures to activate emergency response teams.

The first person on the scene should:

  • Immediately Call 911
  • Call the DOC Police, x7777, to provide details and exact location of the emergency.
  • Remain with the victim.  Send a co-worker to meet the DOC police and Health Unit nurse and escort them to the location.

Upon receiving the emergency call, the DOC Police dispatcher will call:

  • The First Officer -- who will proceed directly to the scene (taking an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) in case the emergency is cardiac-related);
  • The Second Officer -- who will:
    • Direct the Health Unit staff (x3801), who will proceed directly to the scene with emergency equipment such as oxygen and trauma kit.
    • Direct any other available DOC Police Officers, to meet the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team and to respond to the site of the victim.

The trained responder first on the scene will assess the victim.  If AED use is indicated, trained personnel will administer the AED and CPR.  When the Health Unit Nurse arrives, he/she shall be in charge of directing the activities until the local EMS team arrives and assumes care of the victim.

For emergencies occurring outside of the Health Unit duty hours, the procedures are the same for the first person on the scene.  The DOC Police also will follow the same procedures outlined above except for notification of the Health Unit staff.  The DOC Police and a local 911 EMS team will respond to the emergency.
