Moving with the holiday spirit

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Seen everybody’s holiday decorations? Relaxation can take a lot of forms, and some lead to better things than others. Burning off some of the holiday calories, for instance, could be better than leaving those calories to accumulate as new year’s weight.

So after the gifts are unwrapped and before someone hits Play on the first new video, think about this from Acting Surgeon General Steven Galson:

``Thirty minutes of moderate physical activity is good for health, and you could get it with a brisk walk around the neighborhood to see all the lights and lawn decorations. Kids could spend an hour outside playing with new toys. It’s a great day to start a new family tradition of being physically active.’’  (17 seconds)

And it could give you a head start on new year’s resolutions.
