Having a plan about a health plan

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

What do you want your health insurance to cover? How much do you expect to pay? It’s a big decision. And for workers whose companies offer more than one plan, there can be thick piles of competing options from the insurance companies.

It can be daunting. But the basic questions are simple. The director of HHS’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Dr. Carolyn Clancy, gives us the highlights:

``For example, are you single or do you have a family. Do you have a family member with a chronic condition? It’s important to look at what coverage you will get from a particular plan for doctor visits, surgery, hospital stays or other types of care.’’ (13 seconds)

To help you choose, the agency has a consumer guide, Questions and Answers About Health Insurance.
