Watch Your Feet

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Rand Gardner with HHS HealthBeat.

Many people know that those with diabetes have to watch their glucose, or sugar, levels. Yet some people may not realize diabetics also have to watch their feet.

Diabetics often have impaired circulation, so even a minor cut can become infected. That’s why people with diabetes should check their feet.

Director of HHS’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Dr. Carolyn Clancy:

“It’s actually a good idea for people to examine their own feet just about every day, using a mirror, if you need to, to look at the bottom of your foot.” (9 secs)

Dr. Clancy also suggests people with diabetes take off their socks and shoes in the exam room as a way to remind the doctor or nurse to examine their feet.
