Long-Haul Trucks
Heavy-duty long-haul trucks are essential to U.S. commerce and quality of life. However, these high-mileage, high-fuel-use vehicles emit particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and other pollutants at much higher levels than light-duty vehicles. They also use significant amounts of fuel and produce substantial emissions while idling.
Using alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies in long-haul trucks can make a big difference in U.S. air quality and energy security. Biodiesel, biomass-to-liquids diesel, Fischer-Tropsch diesel, hydrogenation-derived renewable diesel, and ultra-low sulfur diesel with advanced emissions control devices are particularly suitable for long-haul truck applications, as is liquefied natural gas. Idle reduction technologies are another effective strategy for saving fuel and reducing emissions.
