Miss Sarah Beall mathematician in the division of geodesy, died at her residence at the Montana Apartments, 1726 M Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., on February 11, 1926. She was 56 years of age. Miss Beall was born in Montgomery County, Maryland, April 19, 1869. She attended high school at Rochester, New York, and later the Missouri School of Mines, University of Missouri, at which institution she specialized in mathematics. Prior to her service with the Coast and Geodetic Survey she worked with Professor (later Rear Admiral) Simon Newcomb, of the United States Naval Observatory at Washington. In 1903 she was appointed to the Coast and Geodetic Survey, serving continuously from that time until her death. Soon after her entrance into the survey she was detailed as computing (mathematic) assistant to the late John F. Hayford, then chief of geodesy. For many years she devoted her time to office computations of gravity observations. For the past 15 years she was in charge of the office astronomic computations of the division of geodesy. She also instruction to new observers, devising many improved methods in this connection.

Miss Beall was the author of a monumental publication recently published by the survey, entitled Astronomic Determinations by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey and Other Organizations, which has already received international recognition.
